How many new things would you try if you just replaced “I can’t” with “I’ll try?”

Welcome to my blog, the ABC’s of a First Year Teacher! Thanks for stopping by!

I have always enjoyed reading blogs, especially about fitness or healthy living, so I’ve thought about the idea of starting my own blog for awhile now. I finally decided to take a chance and try it out!

My name is Amanda, and I am a first year teacher working with Special Education students. I absolutely love what I do! Each day I have an opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life, and I’m convinced there is no better feeling in the world. In the words of Parker Palmer from his book, The Courage to Teach, vocation is where “your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” Some classes are wonderful, some are challenging, but in the midst of it all, my students bring me joy each and every day and I wouldn’t trade that for anything in the world.

Besides my love of teaching, I hope to share with you my love of fitness and running. I first started running a couple of years ago, but in the last year, my love for running has really taken off. I completed my first half marathon last fall, and just signed up for another one in the spring. I have also run a few ten-milers, and various 5K’s. My love for fitness doesn’t just stop with running; I also take several Body Pump classes a week for strength training and take yoga or Pilates on occasion. Running has now become an important part of my life; it’s a way to de-stress, to unwind after a long day teaching, and to live a healthy lifestyle.

As part of that lifestyle, I do enjoy eating healthy (most!) of the time. I say the word “most” because anyone who knows me well will know that chocolate is one of my favorite things; even though I do have a pretty healthy diet, chocolate always finds its way into my day in some form! I frequently can be found baking granola or breads, and love to try new recipes. Healthy living goes hand-in-hand with fitness for me- if I don’t make a healthy diet a priority, my workouts won’t be as effective, so both components are essential to living a healthy lifestyle.

My blog will primarily follow my experiences as a first-year teacher, my interest in leading an active and healthy lifestyle, and my adventures in the kitchen. Check back for future posts!
