Running For a Better Future 5K

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend! I’m definitely enjoying the warmer weather after this past week.

This weekend I ran the “Running for a Better Future” 5K in Newark, MD. It was sponsored by the Worcester County Developmental Center (WCDC), which supports individuals who have disabilities or need assistance to lead an independent lifestyle. Since I work with Special Education students, I was excited to run this race to support them! They offered a 5K or 10K, but I chose the 5K this time with some friends from the gym I attend.

The race was originally supposed to be last weekend, but because of the snow and ice we got, it was postponed to yesterday. I was so glad to not be running in the freezing cold (anyone who knows me knows that I am ALWAYS cold). I even got this for Christmas as a joke –>

It poured all day on Friday, and I found myself becoming less and less motivated to run the race the next day. They say running is 90% mental though- maybe this is true after all! I had been expecting to run the race the previous weekend, and the weather wasn’t very good either, so I think that added to my lack of motivation. I’m glad I decided to run anyways!

Since I work with students in Special Education, I wanted to support them by running this race. I took pictures of me with a couple of the students I primarily work with, and taped the pictures to the back of my race number (Obviously no one could see the pictures for privacy reasons). Every time I felt myself slowing down or getting tired during the race, I thought of my students, and remembered my motivation for running.

The race actually turned out to be a lot of fun! It wasn’t the fastest 5K I have run, but I was still happy with my time (my pace was around 8:20/mile). It was a pretty small race, but I was the second person to finish and came in 1st in my age group. This was my first time to place in a race so I was excited!

Even though it was a rainy day, we all had a great time! We had lunch at the Globe, a restaurant in Berlin, afterwards to celebrate. It was a fun day- looking forward to the next one we all do!

I’m off to finish up some lesson plans for this week… the rest of my afternoon will probably look like this Smile
